I've secured a new domain, but I'm thinking I'll probably just start fresh. I'm not sure when, but I'm going to be consumed by WoW Classic for a good while when that comes out in late August, so maybe when that fever dies down and I go back to playing more anime style games. I might post a couple more impressions up here in the meantime (i.e. for To All of Mankind, which comes out soon).
I mentioned in that earlier blog post that Google might have a bad tendency to serve up my blog posts/impressions as results for '(game name) review' due to the top-level URL having the word 'review' in it, and sure enough, my impressions post about Dragon Star Varnir got a lot of traffic around the English release. My blog also came up as the top result for 'CRYSTAR review' and some others that are not yet out. I feel bad about this for several reasons:
- It's not a proper review, yet it's being served up as one.
- It gets an unfair advantage in Google SEO due to having been up for a long time compared to English reviewers
- Many JRPGs these days release in quite buggy/unbalanced states which later get patched/fixed up in the upcoming months - English players will presumably get the patched versions of these games, and so I think they should be reading reviews from people who are playing the same version they are.
My new URL, when I get around to activating the site, is very plainly just a blog. It doesn't have 'review' anywhere in the domain name, and so I hope that when I blog about things there, Google won't pick it up and serve it as reviews to people.
As a temporary measure, I added the 'noindex' meta tag to my whole blog section. That means that it will stop showing up in web searches (I confirmed today that Varnir/Crystar no longer come back with my site as search results after the web crawler finally reached them a couple days ago). The site itself will stay up until probably early 2020 since it's still already all paid for, but it will go down sooner or later, so if there's anything in particular you really want to keep, I suggest archiving it now. I might migrate a couple still relevant posts over (stuff that never made it overseas, i.e. the one about Trinary), but most of it will be gone. According to my web stats, the only non-game-impression blog page people regularly still come to via web search is the Mary Skelter ending guide, but that will soon be obsolete when MS2 comes out so it's probably a good thing it stops showing up to people. On my new blog, I'll be able to post my thoughts about the JP games I play and link them from twitter or to people on my RSS feed, without worrying about undercutting English reviewers' SEO when the western release date draws near.
If you're interested in keeping up with me whenever I start up the new blog, feel free to follow me on twitter, I'll change my site link there when it's finally up. When I first started this blog, I had never used twitter, and I was just looking for fellow JRPG fans (and I found a lot of them, thanks for all that!). I thought that styling the site as a review site would be a good way to boost games and reach people, but these days I'm more comfortable just being a fan and a blogger. I want to thank everyone who's kept me company on this corner of the internet until now.
